Dumbbells are the ideal piece of strength training equipment to help you tone, build muscle and gain an overall healthy physique. Being easy to store and transport makes them a great accompaniment to your home gym, perfect for your HIIT Workouts and strength training routines.

There are so many benefits to strength training and dumbbells are a great gym weight to help you reap these benefits. With thousands of dumbbell exercises, you’ll never get bored and will be able to adapt and add weight as you get more serious about weight training.

Types of Dumbbells

There are two types - fixed and adjustable.

Fixed Dumbbells

Fixed dumbbells are long-lasting and perfect for heavyweight isolation training and workouts where you change equipment and exercises frequently.

Unlike adjustable dumbbells these are ‘grab and go’, there is no time wasted changing the weights. The downside is that you will need multiple pairs of different weights, in order to increase your strength level and diversify the exercises you can complete. This means they are more expensive compared to buying an adjustable dumbbell set. Also because you will need pairs of multiple weights, they take up more space & will likely require a dumbbell rack to store them properly.

Fixed dumbbells can come in a variety of different materials and shapes.

Hex Dumbbells

Hex dumbbells are great for stability as they will not roll when placed on the floor. This makes them perfect for workouts where you are constantly picking them up and putting them down. Their shape also makes them perfect for floor-based exercises like dumbbell pushups. The metal handle is designed for a secure grip and they show little wear and tear over time.

Vinyl Dumbbells

Vinyl dumbbells are made from cast iron and are coated with a vinyl coating. They are colour-coded which makes it easy to differentiate the weights quickly, which is handy in fast workouts. They can be harder to grip if you have sweaty hands and they show wear and tear over time.

Adjustable Dumbbells Sets

Adjustable dumbbell sets have interchangeable plates that allow you to increase your load and are secured with clips.

Adjustable dumbbell sets are compact, making them very popular for those with home gym setups with limited space. In an adjustable dumbbell set you get multiple weights from just a single pair, so not only do you save space you also save money.

The downside to adjustable dumbbells is there is a limit to how many kg you can add so when you get to that limit and need more weight, you will need to purchase heavier dumbbells. They also aren’t suitable for workouts where you need to change weights or move into other exercises quickly, as they take time to change the weight and will roll when placed on the floor.

Adjustable weight sets are particularly suited to those starting off with weight training. As your training progresses and you get stronger, you simply add more plates. They are a smaller investment compared to purchasing multiple pairs of fixed dumbbells.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Should I Buy Dumbbells in Multiple Weights?

It depends on your strength level and the type of exercise you intend to do. It’s handy to have a set of adjustable dumbbells for isolation exercises with lighter weights. It’s also a good idea to have a pair of fixed hex dumbbells for floor-based exercises and workouts where you change exercises quickly.

  • What Weight Should I Start off With?

To find the right weight for you, choose a weight that makes the last two reps of your set difficult. For example in a 10 rep set, you complete 8 reps comfortably but the last two are quite difficult without seriously compromising your form. Adjustable dumbbells are popular for this reason, as you can test out your strength and do different exercises with different weights.

  • Do I Need a Dumbbell Rack?

If you choose to buy fixed dumbbells in multiple weights, then a dumbbell rack is a good idea to keep them organised and not laying around your home gym as a tripping hazard.

  • Are Dumbbells Better Than Barbells?

It depends on the training style you plan on doing. Dumbbells are better than barbells for isolating specific muscles in your chest, arms and shoulders. They are also more versatile in that you can incorporate them into training styles like HIIT. On the flip side, barbells allow you to lift heavier loads that you couldn’t achieve with dumbbells.

  • Are Dumbbells Better Than Kettlebells?

Both dumbbells and kettlebells are great equipment to have in your home gym. Dumbbells are definitely more suited to isolated weight training vs full-body strength training which kettlebells are great for.
